Today, at the 2024 San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), DC Studios unveiled a new logo with an old school look. The new logo was essentially the classic DC Bullet logo with the word “Studios” underneath . This logo. designed by Milton Glaser, was used by DC from 1976 until it was replaced with the “DC Swoosh logo” in 2005. DC titles bore this logo on its cover for a span of 29 years, so it’s no wonder it became a nostalgic fan favourite.

However, this announcement only indicated a logo change for DC Studios, which implies only movie and TV releases. But it soon became apparent that DC has plans to use this logo for all things DC. Last night, DC filed a new registration with the US patent office for the logo. This registration covers the DC Bullet’s use with “Motion picture films featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure and/or animation, and motion picture films for broadcast on television featuring comedy, drama, action, adventure and/or animation; digital versatile discs featuring music, comedy, drama, action, adventure, and/or animation; stereo headphones; CD ROM computer game discs; mouse pads; sunglasses and cases therefore; downloadable software for use in playing online computer games; downloadable computer game software; computer game software for use on mobile and cellular phones; video and computer game programs; computer and video games which are designed for hardware platforms, namely, game consoles and personal computers; CD-ROM and digital versatile computer game discs and computer programs, namely, software linking digitized video and audio media to a global computer information network; downloadable audio-visual media content in the field of entertainment featuring animated motion pictures, television series, comedies, and dramas; downloadable publications in the nature of books featuring characters from animated, action adventure, comedy and/or drama features, comic books, children’s books; cellular telephone accessories, namely, cellular telephone covers and cellular telephone face covers; smartphone battery chargers; holders adapted for mobile telephones and smartphones; downloadable computer game software for gaming machines, namely, slot machines and video lottery terminals; encoded magnetic cards, namely, cash cards; and decorative magnets”.

This exhaustive registration clearly implies broad usage for the DC Bullet on anything produced by DC or officially licensed material.

If any further confirmation was needed, DC has updated their social media accounts to incorporate the DC Bullet logo, including Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, and even LinkedIn. They have also updated their official web site and the official DC Discord server to feature this logo.

The main question remaining is how long until the DC Bullet makes it return to DC’s print comics, the medium the DC Bullet originated from. Given the lead time between a comic’s creation to its distribution, it could take two or three months. But if DC has made previous preparations with the printers, the DC bullet could return to comic shop shelves more immediately. My guess would be that the DC Bullet will mark its return in October. The solicitations for DC’s October titles on the Lunar Distribution site feature only virgin cover art where they usually include the full trade dress, including the DC logo. It appears that DC was holding back the full solicitation art to keep the return of the DC Bullet under wraps until today. So, I would expect to see the DC Bullet to start gracing the covers of your favourite DC Comics titles on October 2nd.
